19/10/06: This time it's been even longer! Since I last wrote I finished my dissertation, my mother has been to visit, and the fortunes of the Ferrari F1 team have been up and down. 17/10/06:
The McKie-Quick family dog Hannah (seen
here with her biggest fan, Ewen) passed away today in Chilliwack.
Cheers to a great dog who will be greatly missed. 16/10/06: Tonight I chatted with Evan while I was at home but he was somewhere over the Atlantic on his way to Brazil. How cool is that? |
| 13/08/06: Sorry to have been so quiet. We've been busy! Today I updated the Visitors Page to show Roger and Joan (while they are still here!). :: If you haven't noticed, I've been posting most of my photos lately on my Flickr site. Today I put up photos from our week with the Shorts in Umbria. The house we rented was really neat and comfortable and in a fabulous location, so forgive me if the set feels like an ad for the rental agency. Previously I put of photos from visiting the Shorts in Canmore, meeting Alasdair and Emma's kittens, and going up Indian Arm with the Musketeers. :: Back to work on my dissertation for me, but check out my Dissertation Locations Flickr set. | |
| 30/05/06: You won't see this until the site is back up, but sorry it was down for a few days. Due to an ftp glitch with we exceeded our traffic limit for the month. Everything should be back to normal now. | |
| 20/05/06: Specially for Jo, I have finally added photos from George's last three trips: Venice, Florence and Edinburgh! | |
| 17/05/06: Sunday was a busy globetrotting day for me. The day began in Edinburgh, then I spent the afternoon in Amsterdam, then I arrived home in Serramazzoni, Italy. | |
| 04/05/06: Belated congratulations to Jenny and Geordie on their engagement! | |
| 03/05/06: I'm moving back to Italy soon so I'm taking advantage of the chance to attend such local events as the Beltane Festival last Sunday night. My photos don't do it justice, but they'll give you some idea of the fiery madness. | |
| 27/04/06: My essays are done and I've finally posted my photos from the whisky trip! | |
| 14/04/06: Our niece Sydney is back from her first vacation in New Zealand with her parents Pam & Owen. She's already a climber (with some support from behind of course!) | |
| 13/04/06: The trip to Islay and Jura was fantastic. I had a such a good time. We toured 5 distilleries (the ones below + Bowmore) and a brewery (Islay Ales) and I tasted over 20 different whiskies. Here's a group shot. I'm in red on the left of the front row. | |
| 04/04/06: Thursday to Sunday I'll be off tasting whiskies with Yioula and Morgan with the University Water of Life Society on Islay and Jura. Our route will take us to Glasgow, up to Inveraray and down to Kennacraig where we'll get the ferry to Port Ellen (good map here). The plan is to stop at the Auchentoshan distillery on our way to the coast, then tour Ardbeg and Bruichladdich on Islay on Friday, followed by Isle of Jura on, naturally, Jura on Saturday. We'll be staying at the Port Charlotte Youth Hostel. And when I get home Sunday night Evan and my mother will be waiting for me :) | |
| 03/04/06: Look how big Niven is getting! That's him at the playground not far from home in Cambuslang on Saturday. (Niven's parents are Cat's friends Susan and James) | |
| 31/03/06: I went to the Royal Botanic Gardens today and took this. I'll have to go back in a few weeks when the leaves are on the trees for the full spring effect. | |
| 16/03/06: For those of you who are interested, I'm posting some photos of "the kids in my class" in STS at the University of Edinburgh. The main ones were taken in room 1.06 of Old Surgeon's Hall. Thanks to Daisy for the photos and the idea. | |
| 12/03/06: I'm sitting here waiting for the Bahrain Grand Prix to come on and there's a blizzard going on outside. The crocuses will be buried now and the daffodils were about to come out! Looks like it's snowing in Serra too :: Congratulations again to Karamjit and Sanj and many many thanks to their families for welcoming us in India. Check out my photos on Flickr here. :: Check out Jon Williams' cool travel blog. | |
| 24/02/06: Well, I won't mention how the Canadian men's hockey team did but the women won gold. In Curling the women got bronze and the men gold, while both British curling teams were shut out of the medals. Better luck in 2010 in Vancouver. :: We're off to Sanj and Karamjit's wedding. Read all about Sikh weddings here if you're interested (it has pictures!) | |
| 21/02/06: Our Olympic experience was short but sweet, despite both my teams losing (British men's curling and Canadian men's hockey). But not to worry, both have qualified for the next round, and the German men won their curling match on Sunday morning, cheered on by Kathrin and Karim. The Italians played very well too in front of the home crowd. Here's what the venues looked like before they filled up: Pinerolo Palaghiaccio and Torino Esposizione. | |
| 17/02/06: Wow, ages since I posted anything. I meant to say last week that I curled even better (it's measured by percentage of shots you make correctly) than my essay marks, which are also pretty good. :: Evan, Kathrin, Karim and I are off to Torino this weekend to see Olympic Curling and Hockey. Go Canada, Great Britain and Italy! | |
| 27/01/06: Belated congratulations to Sanj and Karamjit on their engagement! And no, I don't mean that they will be living "in Gage" | |
| 26/01/06: I think spring is on the way in Edinburgh because I've seen some flowering trees starting to bloom and the piper is back on Princes Street :: But elsewhere, Evan is working from home in Serramazzoni. "NEVICA!" on the webcam means "it's snowing!" and it's a message for our colleagues down the hill in Maranello who are fellow hill-dwellers and who wondering if they should leave work now (yes!). | |
| 11/01/06: Happy New Year! :: Sydney gets her own page of photos. | |
| 27/12/05: Congratulations to Pam and Owen on the birth of their daughter Sydney (with Mom with Dad) yesterday in Canmore. What a great Christmas present! | |
| 22/12/05: Beautiful sunset today. | |
| 19/12/05: My essays are done! My arms are almost floating above the computer the way they do when you push down really hard on something for a while then let go. It was a special treat to wake up to the snowy Apennines this morning. I forgot how the webcam only shows a part of the view. Happy holidays and best of luck to my friends who are still writing their papers. :: The view later at sunset. | |
| 14/12/05: I have two days left to finish my essays and I have not yet used my website to procrastinate so here are a few tidbits.:: The sun is not spending much time over Scotland these days. According to this site we've reached the earliest sunset but have yet to see the latest sunrise. I took this photo this morning just after 8 am. :: I discovered the lawnmower and golf cart repair shop downstairs from me (see below for their yard covered in snow) counts the famous St. Andrews golf course as one of their clients. :: Last week was Niven's 2nd birthday party and it looks like he had a great time. :: I really REALLY enjoyed the Rufus Wainwright concert in Glasgow this past Saturday but since I am not a stalker I have no photos. :: Just back from the library, where they were handing out free cans of Red Bull as a promotion "so you can concentrate." Welcome to the 21st century. | |
| 26/11/05: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. We had some here in Edinburgh yesterday (white golf carts and melting on Bruntsfield Links later), and it's still snowing in Serramazzoni. | |
| 13/11/05: I went to the University's Remembrance Sunday service this morning at Old College. :: Here are some of the photos I took on my reconnaissance visit to Edinburgh in March (on Flickr). | |
| 03/11/05: Check it out, J.K. Rowling is doing some Harry Potter corporate do at my local movie theatre, the Dominion on November 19th. Cool! | |
| 17/10/05: I've created a guestbook in case you want to leave comments. :: Congratulations to (Andrew) Betts and Sarah on their engagement! | |
| 09/10/05: Things weren't all gloomy work and no play for Evan in Japan. Here he is at the local "Brazilian" restaurant with some of the gang. :: Photos from my tour of Glasgow last Saturday with my pals from the International Student Centre (I am trying out Flickr). | |
| 04/10/05: I'm just back from Bannermans pub where I happily spent the evening with my classmates Jee Hyun and Yioula. I saw three freaky things tonight, two of which were from my previous lives. One was a set of doll-house furniture in a store window I saw from the bus on the way home that contained, if I saw correctly, a pc and monitor as well as desk, cabinet, etc. I also saw on the tv in the corner of the bar a short item on the mermaids of Weeki Wachee, Florida. (Note - I was never a mermaid!) And the third thing was a tshirt worn by a guy in the bar with his back to me from the Great House of Guitars in Rochester, New York. It's a small world after all.ll. | |
| 03/10/05: Sorry for the lack of activity. My own connection should be up soon. Here are a few more postcardy shots and photos from around the city and my place. Old Calton Burial Ground panorama (with Stef). Me on Calton Hill. Me on Arthur's Seat. Susan with Niven watching pigeons. My study zone. | |
| 22/09/05: Being in Scotland I am doing as the Scottish do. I have been curling (blurry photographic evidence) and tonight I will sample whiskies at the Water of Life Society meeting at the university. | |
| 21/09/05: Better late than never. I wasn't able to update my page yesterday because the university network doesn't let me ftp. Today I can update the page thanks to the network connection at my classmate Yioula's apartment. Thanks Yioula! | |
| 20/09/05: Yesterday was a local holiday so today is my first day of classes. The weather so far has been pretty good with only a day or two rain and quite a few sunny days. Since my last posting I have been to the Royal Botanic Gardens (wide shot of the city from the gardens) and on a walking tour of historic Edinburgh given by the International Students Centre (wide shot of the New Town from New College). I now have a bus pass and a membership at the student gym. Now the real work begins, but I'm sure there will still be lots of time for getting to know the city | |
| 15/09/05: I'm continuing to settle in well into my place, the university and the city. Here are some wide shots of varying quality of the view from my bedroom window, the inside of McEwan Hall (which is normally round :), where I attended a session for new postgrads on Tuesday, and Bristo Square outside McEwan Hall and the student union buildings. Yesterday I climbed Arthur's Seat with a big group of international students (city side) (sea side). | |
| 10/09/2005: Greetings from Embra! I updated my page today from a hotspot in the Café Nero near my apartment. Here's what my new living room looks like (1) (2). I'm doing well and enjoying myself already. More soon. | |
| 30/08/05 - My departure day is fast approaching and my preparatory reading (current tome) is going slowwwly. :: I have been reading various blogs (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) about Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama since the storm arrived yesterday. I got in the habit last year while keeping an eye on the ones headed for my Gran's neighbourhood in Florida. The moment I realized how bad things really are came earlier today when I watched video of a man speaking about losing grip of his wife's hand in the rising water around their house, which brought back a scene from the fascinating book Isaac's Storm about the great Galveston hurricane of 1900. | |
| 21/08/05: Congratulations to Federico and Carolina on the birth of their son Fede on August 12th! :: The new fountain in Serramazzoni is bigger than I thought. :: For those who know Peggy and Mark, and for people who love big weddings in general, check out the photos I finally put up from their Big Wedding Day. | |
| 20/08/05: Random overdue notes. Serramazzoni got a lovely fountain in the square with the Municipio a couple of weeks ago. I will go out later and take a picture of it. :: Overnight on Friday the 13th/Saturday the 13th Evan and I were woken up around 5 am by an evil mosquito. We were up anyway so we stuck our heads outside hoping to see meteors (from the annual Perseid shower) but instead happened to catch a very bright passage of the International Space Station. We had seen it before so we knew what it was and confirmed it afterwards on this cool site. If it has Serramazzoni, it probably has where you live too. :: Here's a wide shot of the outside of my new building in Edinburgh (my apartment faces the other side). | |
| 16/08/05: Check out my blurry photos of the crazy hail storm we had in Serra yesterday. | |
| 07/08/05: I'm back from Scotland and I can happily report that I have found a place to live starting in September and that Niven is a very cute and clever boy who can now handle his own ice cream cone. | |
| 18/07/05: Many thanks to Evan for our surprise motorcycle weekend in La Spezia, Lerici and Porto Venere. The heat in our heavy moto gear was worth it! On the weekend I finally started fiction and science fiction writer Iain Banks' whisky travel guide Raw Spirit, and I've been killing some of the boredom at work lately by listening to the Pod Father. | |
| 11/07/05: Belated congratulations to Margaux and Peter on the birth of their daughter Isla on June 30th! | |
| 06/07/05: Peggy and Mark's wedding was a fantastic success and I had a wonderful time as Peggy's maid of honour. Congratulations to Oona and Todd on their engagement! | |
| 27/06/05: Our condolences to Trevor on the loss of his dad, fondly known to us and many of our classmates at UBC as Mr. R, who passed away suddenly this weekend. He will be greatly missed. | |
| I keep forgetting to say that my brother has posted the photos he took on our two visits to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal a couple of weeks ago. Check em' out. | |
| 26/06/05: Cesare and Gessica's wedding was a great success. I added Evelyne and Jen's visit in May to the visitors page. | |
| 24/06/05: Yikes, more than a month since I wrote anything. Tonight I'm working the website for Peggy's wedding, now just over a week away. I'm listening to the bats out front with my bat detector, originally an ultrasonic leak detector, which Evan got here a few years ago. Congratulations to Dom and Elena who are making their marriage official this weekend in Maranello, and to Cesare and Gessica who will be married in the hills above Modena tomorrow. Google's satellite map service expanded a few days ago and now you can even see Serramazzoni! I can even tell you that they took the photo on a winter Wednesday because it's market day and there's some snow. Amazing. | |
| 21/05/05: Update on the orphan muskox. | |
| 16/05/05: The sneezing continues here in Serramazzoni as Evan prepares for the next race in Monte Carlo. Congratulations to Bryce and Kelly who were married yesterday in Chilliwack. I see there is a little orphan muskox in the news in Canada. GEORGE IS BACK with photos from his latest windsurfing trip with Roni at Cape Hatteras! | |
| 08/05/05: Spring has definitely sprung in true Modenese style: warm days with flowers blooming, birds singing and the cheerful green of fresh leaves on the trees (and Cat and Evan sneezing periodically). The bees have been busy storing their reserves in the holes on the walls of our balcony as usual, annoying Evan to no end. Work is keeping me really busy. The only changes to the website lately are the section dedicated to Peggy's wedding. Compliments to Thias who made a work of art from the photo of me with the Gaudi dragon in Barcelona. Don't ask about how Ferrari did today in Barcelona (ugh). | |
| 11/04/05: Here's hoping April showers really do bring May flowers. The weather is currently doing a pretty good impression of Vancouver winter: non-stop rain since Saturday night. Where will all the water go? At least it's not snowing! Evan and I went for a nice motorcycle ride on Saturday afternoon around the Parco Regionale dei Sassi di Roccamalatina. On the spring wild flower scale the yellow flowers are officially out (homeland security-style graph coming soon). | |
| 03/04/05: Another nice weekend in Serramazzoni is over and Evan is on his way home from another difficult race, this time in Bahrain. But things should improve from here and it will be nice to have him home for a while before the next race at Imola. The Italian regional elections today and tomorrow will finally mean the end of reams of election pamphlets arriving in our mailbox over the last few weeks. The reaction here to the Pope's death has been greater and more intense than I imagined. All sporting events were cancelled over the weekend and Josh, Kathrin and I were forced to follow the F1 race today from Formula1.com's live timing site when we found all 7 channels showing nearly identical coverage since last night. | |
| 28/03/05: Happy Easter! Evan has arrived in Bahrain and is doing well. Good luck with the new car this weekend, Evan! We changed our clocks here this past weekend so don't be surprised if the time and/or daylight seem off on the webcam and weather frog. This long weekend I went jogging twice and both times I went out and found myself in the middle of Easter weekend festivities in Serra. On Friday, as Gavin from the Kids In The Hall would say, I literally found myself in the middle of a big bike race. Today as I ran between some floats of a kids' parade I had confetti showered on me by a guy in a medieval costume standing on a float with a giant swan. This weekend Evan and I tried out Ipodder, a tool to help take advantage of podcasting. We have to say, it's very cool listening to CBC's Quirks & Quarks whenever and wherever you like. | |
| 20/03/05: After watching Ferrari do really poorly in Sepang, Kathrin and I went to the centre of Modena to enjoy another nice day. There was a flower and plant market on, as well as a small classic car show in the Piazza Grande (photos). Roger sent me a few photos from Owen's graduation. | |
| 19/03/05: Today was a gorgeous spring day. Two and a half weeks after the coldest week of the winter the temperature was in the low 20's even in Serramazzoni. I spotted two lizards on my way back from coffee in town, where I felt like I had stepped into an episode of Carabinieri when two handsome officers in full uniform came in for coffee. Later I took Guido out to stretch his legs (new photos). | |
| 17/03/05: Happy St. Patrick's Day. And CONGRATULATIONS to Peggy and Mark on their engagement! On my walk tonight I heard my first bat of 2005 in the main square of Serramazzoni. And the forecast high for Saturday is an incredible 22 degrees. As usual, Evan will return from Australia and Malaysia to literally find a new season. Sorry, too tired for link of the day. Am net-less during the day, which is a real strain. | |
| 13/03/05: Spring is on its way, finally. Watch the snow melt on the webcam. For those who knew her, I just put up photos of Gran (Peggy Andrews) who passed away February 9th. | |
| 10/03/05: I started work today on my short-term job with another famous local car manufacturer. It was tough but everyone was nice and it should get better as time goes on. I'm still working on the Scotland photos as well as photos of my Gran, who passed away a month ago yesterday...Here's a photo of Owen during his fireman training. | |
| 08/03/05: Happy International Women's Day. I have added maps now to show "Where in the world is Evan?" and "Where in the world is Cat?" (which will be less exciting). I am just back from a visit to Susan, James & Niven in Glasgow and a visit to the University of Edinburgh. Watch this space for photos. CONGRATULATIONS to Owen on his graduation from the Calgary Fire Academy last Friday! | |
| 23/02/05: In attempt to get my site to show up in search engines I am moving my site news to the main page. | |
| We have a new webcam that gives a bigger image and handles contrast better. With this one we don't need a tripod cluttering up the living room anymore either. If it's dark check out the gallery of the best shots so far and the weather frog is always on. | |
| Congratulations! To Mark and Cyne on the birth of their son Colin (photo) on December 31st, To Katy and Mika on the birth of their daughter Ellen (photo) on January 3rd, To Kirsten and Florian on the birth of their son Louis on January 25th, To Monica and Federico on the birth of their son Riccardo on February 1st To Giacomo and Monia on the birth of their twin daughters Giorgia and Ginevra on February 2nd. | |
| There are new Photos of my trip to Barcelona! I updated the Visitors Page to show visits from Sally, Alexandre, Ben and Josh. | |
